General Informations
- Injured water birds often show signs of distress by sitting out of the water and allowing close approach if severely unwell.
- Rescuing water birds can be challenging as they instinctively return to the water to escape danger.
- Ducklings may be orphaned due to predator attacks or disturbances, such as aggressive male ducks chasing the mother. Additionally, ducks sometimes nest far from water, leaving ducklings trapped in unsafe areas.
Common Injuries in Water Birds
- Predator Attacks: Birds may be injured by dogs, cats, foxes, or even other birds.
- Wing and Leg Breaks: These injuries often occur during crash landings, collisions, or attacks. While bird bones are fragile, they heal quickly if properly treated.
- Fishing Line Entanglement: Discarded fishing lines and hooks frequently injure water birds, causing entanglement, ingestion, or immobilization in trees or water.
- Feather Damage: Missing or damaged feathers compromise flight and waterproofing, essential for survival. Birds use preen glands to maintain feather integrity and waterproofing.
Handling an Injured Water Bird
- If you find an injured or trapped water bird, or orphaned ducklings, contact a wildlife rescue organization immediately.
- Approach cautiously to avoid further stress or injury. For ducklings, ensure their safety until professionals can assist.
- Do not attempt to handle entangled or injured birds without guidance, as improper handling can worsen their condition or lead to harm.
